After a couple of 50+ degree days in Chicago this past week, and with today being March 1st – I like every other Chicagoan is hopeful in starting to think about the idea of spring (and remembering that it does indeed exist)! And that has me thinking about my 7’6″ x 9’3″ balcony: how soon can I use it and what should it look like! Keep reading because I’m sharing my unique inspiration for the whole vibe, and what items I plan on using to achieve my personal outdoor sanctuary… in the middle of the city!
Anyone who knows me knows that I love all things J. Crew – so it should come as no real shock that my favorite earrings are the inspiration for my balcony design! And while I am a huge fan of neutral spaces, this spring/summer (ok – let’s be honest – with this apartment in general) I am feeling a little bit more vibrant. These colors are all things fun, spring and summer are full of fun, so I’m thinking this balcony will be fun!

1 – Asha Indoor/Outdoor Pillow – Navy Blue
LOVE: The color and pattern of this pillow. It will pop beautifully with the orange, green, and teal. The best part is when winter rolls around NEXT year, I can use it inside!
2 – Outdoor Printed Atin Ikat Lumbar Pillow – Melon
LOVE: The orange with a little bit of red and yellow mixed in is not too matchy matchy. The white helps break the color up a bit and the tassels on the corners are just super fun!
3 – Belham Living Brighton Deep Seating Club Chair
LOVE: I am totally biased (I have two of these chairs) and they are perfect! The deep seat means they are ideal for lounging, but the clean lines means they don’t overpower a little balcony!
4 – Imperial Vine Garden Stool
LOVE: Is go bright or go home a thing?! Obviously the color is the major moment with this garden stool, but the negative space in the design makes it feel a little bit more airy.
5 – Sunbrella Indoor/Outdoor Chevron Throw – Melon *Splurge*
LOVE: For the coming early spring days, and cool summer nights I love the idea of a made for outside throw. With a subtle pattern and white fringe edge, this is a nice way to keep with the color palette. And because I want to be extra (and preppy)… monogram!
6 – Couristan Dolce Flowering Fern Indoor/Outdoor Area Rug
LOVE: I had both my eyes on this rug last year, but found it was not prudent to decorate while unemployed lol! So this is the year. I love that this rug will make my balcony feel lush until I get some live plants. The white keeps things from being too busy and the pops of orange and purple invite bold colors into the design.
7 – Galvanized Moroccan String Lights 12.5
LOVE: the ethnic feel of these lights which will add a little flare to the balcony. They also look pretty durable which is important because my balcony is on the 17th floor and the wind can be real and relentless.
8 – Three Piece Clay Pot Planter Set
LOVE: Was originally looking at this set in white (they also come in black) but decided on the grey because color wise it is in the same ball park as the aluminum legs on the ottoman. I think whats great about getting a set is that you have more design flexibility: cluster the containers together, or spread them out, or some combo.
9 – Travira Aluminum Ottoman
LOVE: Deciding on an ottoman was like… REALLY HARD…size, shape, color! But I love the size of this one, and that the color ends up being the fun teal pop like my earring inpo. This ottoman also comes in white, black, and navy, so you’ve got options!
10 – Wood and Rope Lanterns
LOVE: What I love about these candle holders is that they are a mix of wood and metal and with nice clean lines – a couple of these sprinkled around the balcony will give the perfect mood lighting. (Candles not included but I’ll be going for a flameless something.)
I seriously find that making a design concept helps me hone in on the overall vision for a space. If you ever want a hand putting one together for your own space – shoot me an email, I’d love to collaborate!
